MAMELI - Il ragazzo che sognò l’Italia

An event miniseries bringing a wide audience the extraordinary and little-known story of Goffredo Mameli, poet and hero of the Risorgimento and the inspired author of the song that would become the national anthem of the Italian Republic.

A kind of first rock star of history, whose words gave voice to an entire generation and shaped its choices, Mameli is a young man living in 1847.

His life, brief and blazing like those of the most iconic rock stars, is the story of someone whose example could ignite the hearts of the people.

Three hundred volunteers leave his native Genoa with him to support the Five Days of Milan in 1848. Another five hundred patriots set sail alongside him to defend Rome in 1849.

Young people, and not only the young, recognise in Mameli the pure passion of someone capable of loving without restraint.

That same intensity runs through the two love stories that frame his public life: the first tragic, destroyed by an arranged marriage of convenience; the second joyful, or as joyful as love can be for a man fighting at the front, aware that he could die at any moment and yet willing to swear eternal devotion.

Between them lies everything else: the writing of the anthem; the great demonstration at Oregina, where it is sung for the first time by more than thirty thousand patriots; his meeting and friendship with another great Genoese figure, Nino Bixio; the First War of Independence; and the Roman Republic, where Goffredo becomes a protégé of Giuseppe Garibaldi and Giuseppe Mazzini.

The miniseries spans two years of passion, love, struggle, intrigue, poetry, political meetings and debate, friendship, betrayal and espionage.

Above all, however, it is a story of personal growth, of confronting deep wounds and of questions that are not only political, but existential.
